mother earth

I have been advised by my new backgammon buddy to think positively. Generally, I only need telling the once, so I am going to try my best to relax and really enjoy having the week off work. I was slightly worried about filling the time now that I won’t be moving into my flat just yet but as luck would have it my friend N is off work too and she has invited me on a 2 night trip to see Meeshy Moo in the countryside.

Cor, now I haven’t seen MM for a few years. She’s my original MF buddy. Hand picked by Mr Ed Smith, I was slightly nervous that she was chosen for her looks rather than her ability. But for a hair and make-up artist who couldn’t type, she learnt quick and had a great attitude. Somehow, out of nowhere, we immediately became the best of friends and she ended up staying at my flat on the nights when she didn’t go back to hubby in the country.

MM was always a Mother Earth figure and very into her alternative medicine methods. She even diagnosed a previous kidney ailment from the blown up eye of our MF curator, which featured on the promotional material. This freaked him out no end. It was from her that I learnt to play hard, as well as work hard and we were pretty damn wild while doing a brilliant job. Working that festival is hard work but if you party just as hard as you work it can be the most amazing time ever. Cough, playing was restricted to out of office hours. Somewhere, no doubt in one of her massive alt-therapy textbooks, MM had read that in order to relax adequately, one must play for every hour that one had worked. So, every night we relaxed until approx 4 or 5am, somehow managing to rise again at 8am and do it over and over again.

Our favourite story was the time we were ‘relaxing’ after a very demanding gig. We had an unusually late start the next day: 1pm and it was a beautiful hot summer night. Somehow we ended up in the park with colouring in books and pencils at 8am. The next day at work was torture, but luckily the pain only had to be endured for a few hours. Since I last saw her, MM has had not 1 but 2 children and by all accounts really is mother earth now.

the law is an arse

Well at least solicitors are!

I still have not exchanged. I am in bits.

The one great principle of the English law is to make business for itself. There is no other principle distinctly, certainly, and consistently maintained through all its narrow turnings.

life is sweet

It’s not all bad though. I always said that it would be my friends who would get me through this difficult period, so you’re gonna have to forgive me for getting a bit sentimental here….. Cheers to anyone who invited me round (especially these last few nail-biting weeks) while I’ve been living with my lovely, but teetotal, bro (special tip of the hat to Shark & TH for having me for over a week). Cheers to Catster, Shark, Mafling et al who understood how I felt when I lost my book collection and who clubbed together to replace my entire! reading list from last year. Cheers to anyone that’s been through their stuff and given me their duplicates. Cheers to anyone who has trawled round the shops with me. Cheers to the Vixen for becoming a private dick with me. Cheers to Catster for going to the park again to take more lovely pictures for me. Cheers to those at work who all clubbed together for loads of Habitat vouchers. People really have rallied around and I really have been rather spoilt.

And of course I have been helping too. Thanks to my interim payment, I have been practising a Keynesian method: buying my way out of depression. I have the best excuse ever for buying anything “mine got burnt in a fire”. I can barely get into my bedroom for boxes and after Thursday night’s second trip to IKEA I have actually spilled out into the hallway. There are stacks at my parents, a bag and couch at Perry’s and tonnes of new pots and a huge lantern at Papa Nicole’s. I have so much stuff now I will have to hire a van to move.

It’s been my routine every weekend this year to trawl around the shops at the weekend. Shopping, reading and being rather spoilt have kept my spirits up, especially the shopping. Take today. I bought myself a lovely old school Bush radio, a disco rope light, a par can (to go with my disco glitter ball), 2 second hand books, some fairy lights and some bits for my (soon to be) over equipped kitchen. I mean how could that lot not raise a smile?

I PROMISE THAT MY SENSE OF HUMOUR WILL RETURN WITH THE POSTCODE SE24

boo hoo

I’m in hiding with a bottle of red wine as there have been no reports of flying pigs today and I don’t want to hurt an innocent bystander. But I can always talk to you.

It simply beggars belief that I found my flat at the end of September, there is no chain and yet I have still not moved in. It’s all down to the incompetent advice of the witch’s solicitor. And of course the witch won’t be rushed. I had better not run into her on the street until I’m very in place and very happy.

Without going into the long and boring detail I have been in the same position since 20th December to the Monday before last: her waiting for answers from the council and the results of the local searches. Her solicitor has been stringing me along and lying to me for weeks. But at last we were getting somewhere and were supposed to be exchanging today and completing next Friday. Today my heart was in my mouth all morning as I waited anxiously for news that we had. Alas, when news did finally come, almost inevitably it was bad. Her solicitor had not checked the witch’s mortgage offer, despite having had it for weeks and inevitably there was something wrong. There is still the very slightest possibility that I may complete next Friday as the witch has got her stuff all packed up and has booked a removal firm. By all accounts she was tearing her hair out all day trying to sort out the problem. How I laughed. “Good” I told the Estate Agent, “now she knows how we have all felt for months”. I will not be holding my breath though.

Bro is bearing up well considering. Actually I think that he may miss me when I go.

Coming soon: it's not all bad........

i can't wait to have a garden 530,421

I simply cannot wait to have a garden. Last night I went to see my old friend Papa Nicole. It was a lovely clear night and venus was huge and bright in the night sky. Wrapped in blankets beneath burning fuel we braved the freezing conditions and stayed in the garden playing cards until 10.30.

nye nyc

While out jogging I noticed a sign on the free way telling all that 37th to 57th Street would be closed from 5pm-3am for New Year revellery madness. After much group discussion we decided to have New Year’s brunch, rather than dinner and to stay close to home (well in it) for our New Year celebrations. After dining on a feast at the brilliant Knickerbocker we separated to fulfil our NYE party duties. The Elf and I hopped it to the Halloween costume store where the Elf, after about 40 minutes, decided on cheeky devil horns and a tail for herself and finally submitted to the rest of us being allowed party hats at the very least. We wandered hand-in-hand (awww I want one) around a madly busy and party popping neon glowing Union Square for streamers and party accessories and finally found a shop that sold balloons. None stocked Christmas crackers, and I don’t recommend that you ask for them in NY, unless you want storeowners to think that you are, crackers I mean. Party poppers and blowy things were purchased at discount on the Square. The German adults stocked up on booze, TH and the Shark on grub and by the time the Elf and I arrived in a cab to worried parents, it was just about time for the revellery to begin with festive balloon blowing and costume putting on. Frank cooked too much food, we all over ate, we watched Fawlty Towers and only playing keep the balloon up gave us a second wind.

It was all rather odd as we celebrated not 1, not 2 but 3 midnights, the German’s, naturally coming first. The UK’s saw a blast of text messages bleeping from all corners of the flat and I rang Mummy. By the time midnight actually came in NYC we were all quite blase but corks popped, resolutions were made, we hugged and kissed. My Angel cards were CREATIVITY and EDUCATION. Yum and at 12.01am the Shark opened an email from Jimbob containing…….

There are some traditions that must be kept, although sadly, there was no shark conga.

blogging for two

Bleurgh. Despite the bestest of intentions I am well behind and days seem to have merged into each other. Shark sends her apols and demands that I blog for two, so from collected memory…..

On Thursday we embarked to Bryant Park with grand (de)illusions of ice-skating, well TH and purplemafling were thinking of giving it a go. However, the queue going half way around the square rather put them off. We did hang about to watch though. Te he. Runny nosed kids and adults of all ages grasping onto the hand barrier running around the edge for dear life. Except the ones that were good of course. They showed off. The sound track was strange to say the least; with every other song sounding like it came from an all American cast of Annie the musical, mixed in with snippets of jazz and a small amount of disco. We stayed until our limbs were frozen and our noses were running and sauntered around the market where we bought hats to warm our frozen bodies. The Elf and I went on the Carousel, where of course I was the only adult. I think that I enjoyed it much more than all the 3 year olds, who were no fun at all. Next stop was Pax where we all nourished our bodies with much needed green leaves, fruit, veggies and gorgeous warm soup. Yum.

Up to this point, every evening I was rather embarrassed to follow the Elf’s bedtime by minutes and decided to take drastic action. Completely lost without my regular run I bought myself some rather jazzy bright red new running trainers. Alas I couldn’t use them until the next day and fell asleep at 10pm AGAIN after dining on a feast of TH’s homemade chilli. Still, a lady of fierce resolve, on waking on Friday I did go out running along the East River. TH later, rather competitively worked out that it was close to 4 miles. So, awake and with energy to spare I was able to partake in the trip to Central Park with the German contingent. We all hooked up later at the 55 Bar, one of Sharks’ favourite jazz joints. It’s a well kept secret that I bought all of Ella’s song books on vinyl when I was younger and as the lady covered loads of these, I impressed TH by knowing loads of lyrics and only needed to be told when to clap twice this time round. Friday night in Manhattan without a dinner reservation resulted in chaos and we eventually found a pizza joint that could accommodate us close to home. It was madly busy and the waitress was clearing up a mess by our table as we waited. Hmmm, she didn’t clear up well enough, as we found out on our exit. Shark’s coat looked like it had been jizzed, not jazzed, all over and a trip to the dry cleaners was called for the next day. Still, I made it to see 11pm, for once, and soundly slept for 10 hours, even managing to only hear 1 of 10 wrong numbers that resulted in Frank hiding all the phones in the cutlery drawer. Yet another advantage of living near an airport, ear plugs!

Saturday morning saw myself and TH going out for a short run. Starving by the time we made it to our brunch date of dim sum, we managed to devour 2 hours worth of food in 20 minutes. Well, they give it to you so quickly and how were we to know that we were supposed to be relaxing and chatting when they brought plate after plate of newly experienced delights? The German party left to explore another corner of NY while the Shark, TH and myself went back to HQ to watch Arsenal thrash Sheffield United LIVE. Isn’t technology wonderful? Except that they didn’t. Sheffield United scored at the end of the first half and TH spent much of the second half with his fists in his mouth as Arsenal successfully managed not to equalise. I quickly scarpered to the Natural History Museum to meet up with the German party as we wandered around the Museum looking for characters out of A Night at the Museum before going to see the brilliant Cosmic Collisions narrated by Robert Redford! Wow, planetariums have come on a bit since I was last there. Purplemafling cooked us a wonderful meal and I again managed to stay up past the Elf’s bedtime. Hurrah.

happy

I’m unbearably happy. Today and yesterday(!) I woke up in Manhattan! This morning, just like yesterday, TH made breakfast and everyone gathered around the breakfast table in high spirits. There are 3 laptops on the go, 4 yesterday.

Who cares if the journey here was gruelling. At last I had found a benefit to living so close to Heathrow. On waking not only did I know that scheduled flights were air-bourne but I only had to get up at 6.30 for a 10am flight. Dearest bro dropped me in off in good time to check in. Or so I thought. I checked in my baggage just as they were calling for check in to close. I had queued close to 1½ hours without having eaten or drunk a thing. Upon checking in, I dashed towards the departure gate and greedily ate a bacon and egg baguette, and supped on a latte and some water before queuing again to exchange my currency. Security check in saw another huge queue. I seemed to be behind scores of people who had never travelled before. I made it through to the other side just in time to see that my flight was closing and had another mad dash to Gate 28. Pah.

The flight went just as you’d expect really although I was amazed at the attitude of the AA stewards, and not necessarily in a bad way. I watched some TV, tried to sleep and had polite conversation with the man next to me, who was on the way to see his Methodist Minister wife of 10 years. Now, that is truly a long distance conversation. On landing I sailed through customs and after some excitable conversation the lovely lady who ran the taxi queue pushed me to the front of the queue, so I was in the Shark & TH’s within 1 ½ hours of landing. I also managed to find a sane taxi driver.

On arriving I was greeted with a glass of cold champagne, which I supped while emptying the contents of my bag. Cheesy Wotsits, Hula Hoops, mince pies, Nurofen, Feminax and shark/purple related pressies. The remainder of the day was spent boozing and turkey eating, well, it was Boxing Day. The routine only being broken with a short trip to top up with yet more vodka and gin. I met the lady opposite and under instructions, I acted myself. Spookily, she has not knocked here since. I eventually admitted defeat and went to bed just after 9 where I had a spectacular 9 hour sleep.

Yesterday I woke up at 7.15am full of beans yesterday, just the right frame of mind for a trip to Coney Island. After a brisk walk in the sea air, where Shark reminised about the time she found a gun there, we had a huge slap up lunch at Nathan’s, famous for their hot dogs. Yum. The N train brought us straight to Union Square and a trip to the cinema to watch A Night in the Museum. Brilliant, you must go to see it. We strolled down to Livebait and immediately discovered we were wearing our drinking hats and only want of food and the matter of a minor drove us to leave. Fuelled by alcohol we played tag all the way home, home being particularly apt for the Shark who could not be it as she was home. Fair? We let her get away with it though as she is providing bed and full lodgings. On arriving home no one fancied turkey anymore EVER AGAIN so we ordered take out very late which seemed to give everyone, apart from me, horrid nightmares and, perhaps, some spooky premonitions. Watch this space.

for future presentation : codenamelizzy mk 2

Bah.

So, I’ve been staying with my bro for 2 ½ months now and we’ve adapted to living with each other very well. I haven’t bored you all with what’s happening on the house-buying front as it is very boring and very stressful. Who wants to hear about that? Oh, OK then, here’s an example. On Monday my Estate Agent called to say that if the existing problems were ironed out that I would be completing on 15th December. Goodness I was excited but luckily I decided not to hold my breath. Good job, as yesterday he called to warn me that there were new potential problems (not on my side – TG) and that they could easily delay everything by 2-3 months. Ever since I made my offer I have been driving hard to complete before Christmas. But that was when I needed a whole week to unpack. It’s obviously not quite so urgent now. I’ve lost the will now that all I have to unpack is my bed (beautiful), a portable TV, a small stereo, 2 lamps and a stool. These were the things that I brought here to make myself feel at home.

I have to remind myself to look on the bright side. It’s only my (faltering) positive attitude, my family and my friends that will get me through this. And there are some bright sides of course. Only yesterday my old friend Nicole rang to say that she has a spare sofa for me. Not just any old sofa, but a most comfortable sofa, one that I always loved sitting/lying on!!!!!! Plus my brother gave me some fairy lights for my garden. Ahhhhh. And most importantly……codenamelizzy mk 2 was able to really kick off. Once I had properly registered something that my solicitor said “please keep the receipts for any replacement clothing that you purchase”. As soon as I left his office I figured out that I could not go on living forever with only 1 pair of jeans, 1 pair of trousers, 3 pairs of shorts and a few tee-shirts. It was fine for a few weeks but not for good. Not during the dead of winter and during party season. I did have some help though. My solicitor sent me on a detective mission yesterday and Vixen, being a student, was able to help on a weekday. Whilst trying to keep our spirits up I distracted her with tales of getting dresses for £8 at Primark and I literally dragged her in there when our detective duties were done. She duly dragged me into a shoe shop where I got into the spirit and bought myself a pair of shoes. Not trainers or boots, shoes! And then I bought a skirt and a pair of shorts and 2 pairs of footless tights. The mania carried on today and I bought some tee-shirts and a cardigan. codenamelizzy mk2, while not quite there, will at least be well dressed.

no, it's not a joke

Today I received a phone call to tell me that everything that I had in storage whilst waiting to move, ie my past and my whole life, has been burnt to the ground.

All my photos, my books, my CDs, my clothes, shoes, my disco glitter ball, my rope lights, my paintings, all the beautiful things anyone has ever bought me, my furniture and my love notes from HWCBN EVERYTHING has gone.

Apparently they are doing a whip round at work to buy me a kettle.
